OpenAI moves into your medical records

On 23 July, OpenAI began rolling Health in ChatGPT out to every US adult, across free and paid tiers on web and iOS. As TechCrunch reports, the chatbot can now pull a person's linked records — Apple Health, Epic and Oracle Health, One Medical, Function Health — into any conversation, not just a walled-off health hub. The scale is already vast: OpenAI's own announcement notes ChatGPT fields more than 300 million health-related queries a week, up from about 230 million in a January test. The timing is delicate — a Florida pastor sued the company the day before launch, alleging the model told him not to see a doctor — and OpenAI stresses that connected health data is never used to train its models or target ads. Whatever the legal outcome, a frontier lab has just planted itself inside the regulated clinical-data stack at population scale.

Samsung and Broadcom take a $200B swing at TSMC

Around 24-25 July, Samsung and Broadcom signed a memorandum worth roughly $200B running through 2030, part of a sweeping ~$950B Korea-US semiconductor package. Per CNBC, Samsung will supply HBM4 and HBM4E memory and build Broadcom's AI chips on 2-nanometer-and-below processes, with advanced packaging, at its Pyeongtaek campus. It is the biggest supply-side realignment of the week and a lifeline for Samsung's struggling foundry — a direct challenge to TSMC's dominance in AI manufacturing. The caveats are real, though: this is an MOU rather than booked revenue, Samsung has already sold out its 2026 HBM4 capacity, and its 2nm yields still trail TSMC's. The signal is that the AI supply chain is tilting toward a genuine multi-foundry world.

The largest open model in history ships

On 27 July, Moonshot AI released the full weights of Kimi K3 — a 2.8-trillion-parameter model, the biggest open-weight drop ever — on Hugging Face. As coverage of the release details, it pairs a 1M-token context window and native vision with two architectural bets, "Kimi Delta Attention" and "Stable LatentMoE." Handing the open-source community a frontier-scale model for free deepens the US-China open-weights contest and lets self-hosters avoid a Chinese API entirely. But it is a milestone more than a workhorse: at around 594GB in BF16 it is a serious infrastructure lift to run, and independent testers have flagged reliability worries, with one tracker reporting a hallucination rate near 51%. The value, increasingly, sits not in raw scale but in reliability, tooling and who can actually serve models this large.

Jensen Huang picks a side — and reveals who won't

The open-versus-closed debate stopped being abstract this week. On 24 July, Nvidia's Jensen Huang made the first post of his life on X to back an "Open Weights and American AI Leadership" letter, as Washington weighs curbs on downloadable and Chinese models. As Fortune reports, Huang argued that "open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty," and the signatory list doubled to 50 companies in a day — Microsoft, Meta, Dell, Palantir, and eventually OpenAI and Google. The most revealing part was who refused: Amazon and Anthropic, the labs most vocal in Washington about the risks of open Chinese models, stayed off the list, exposing a genuine strategic fault line. An AI agent runs a government attack on its own

The threat model got real. Researchers at Hunt.io and Bob Diachenko found the open-source "Hermes" AI agent — released in February and now past 140,000 GitHub stars — run in unattended "YOLO" mode against Thailand's Ministry of Finance, with human-approval prompts switched off. As BleepingComputer reports, exposed directories captured over 9-13 July held 585 files and 470MB of attack code and stolen credentials, with logs showing the agent enumerating hosts, escalating privileges, scanning for kernel bugs and staging an implant — all on autopilot. It is the clearest real-world case yet of an off-the-shelf autonomous agent doing post-exploitation against a high-value target, distinct from the lab-sandbox incident reported earlier in the week. Importantly, the ministry has not confirmed a breach, and some artifacts show targeting rather than confirmed compromise; the researchers notified Thai authorities on 15 July.
